So, probably like many of you reading this, I was a lifetime ‘yo-yo’ dieter and ‘excuse maker’ who had lived with being overweight and who had suffered lack of confidence for most of my adult life.
At the age of 49 with the pounds piling on ‘yet’ again and me just accepting that ‘that’s how it was when you got to my age’ my husband suggested a party for my 50th Birthday!
A party sounded lovely as I’m a sociable type, however, a party dressed in what I could only imagine would be a very large, black tent (to hide as much of me as possible!) just filled me with horror and dread!
What was even more scary was the realisation that the pounds had piled back on again and if I didn’t do something about it, this would be what would happen consistently as I moved into my 50s, 60s and beyond. Who knows where I would end up!
That was ‘the OH **** Moment’ for me. My birthday was 8 months away and I needed to do something. I needed to change.
I’m pleased to say mine is a good news story as I knuckled down, joined one of the popular local weight loss groups and started my journey. I pinned pictures on my fridge of ‘the party dress’ that I wanted to wear and set about planning my meals, walking as much as I could and attending my weekly weight loss class.
There were good weeks and bad weeks, some weeks when I lost pounds, other weeks when I stayed the same despite being angelic. There were those other weeks when I had fallen ‘off the horse’ completely only to go to class and to have lost weight! They were great weeks!!
Two days before my Birthday Party I weighed in at class and had done it! In fact, I was half a pound below my goal weight and I felt amazing, the best I had ever felt and there I was knocking on the door of the ‘BIG 50’!
So inspired by my journey and what I had achieved, I trained to be a Weightloss and Wellbeing Coach to help and inspire others. For the first time in my life I had confidence, I could stand up in a room in front of 50 plus people and coach, mentor and inspire them; it was so very, very empowering and rewarding.
Through my whole experience, what I learnt above all was about ‘myself’.
It was about ensuring that every single day I could get up with the right ‘Mindset’, I changed my ‘Habits’ (all of us have so many of them good and bad), I accepted nothing but ‘Positivity’ and wouldn’t let myself think anything other than positive thoughts and thanks to a diary I kept, many photographs stuck everywhere throughout my house I gave myself the ‘Willpower’ to achieve what I wanted to achieve if I made it happen.
Ok, I completely understand, this all sounds so easy and it isn’t easy at all, especially on those rainy, cold winter days when you feel starving hungry, or on those days when you just feel beaten and that ‘nothing is ever going to happen’!
